Backend Engineer (Coding Agent Experience) Position: Backend Engineer (Coding Agent Experience) Type: Hourly Contract (Part-Time) Compensation: $85/hour About the Opportunity This opportunity is for experienced Backend Engineers interested in contributing to advanced AI research and evaluation projects focused on frontier AI coding models. The role involves evaluating AI-generated backend implementations, assessing engineering quality, and applying real-world software engineering expertise to improve the performance of next-generation AI coding agents. Responsibilities • Use frontier AI coding agents to complete and evaluate complex backend engineering tasks. • Review AI-generated code for correctness, quality, maintainability, scalability, and performance. • Identify bugs, edge cases, security concerns, and architectural tradeoffs in model-generated solutions. • Compare outputs from multiple AI coding models and evaluate their strengths and weaknesses. • Apply professional engineering judgment to realistic backend engineering scenarios. • Provide structured technical feedback to improve AI-generated code quality and reliability. • Collaborate with technical reviewers to maintain consistent evaluation standards. Required Qualifications • 2+ years of professional Backend Engineering experience. • Experience building REST APIs, distributed systems, microservices, backend platforms, databases, or cloud-based applications. • Strong programming experience with one or more backend technologies such as Python, Java, Go, Node.js, C#, or similar languages. • Regular experience using AI coding tools such as Cursor, Claude Code, Codex, Windsurf, Gemini CLI, or similar coding agents. • Strong understanding of software architecture, backend design patterns, debugging, testing, and performance optimization. • Ability to evaluate AI-generated code and identify implementation issues, edge cases, and architectural tradeoffs. • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and written communication skills. Preferred Qualifications • Experience working on large-scale production systems. • Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform (GCP). • Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD pipelines, and distributed systems. • Experience reviewing production code or mentoring backend engineers. • Prior experience with AI model evaluation or code review projects.
